The Greenville County School Board on Tuesday approved the charter for Greer Middle College Charter High School, which plans to open on the Greer campus of Greenville Technical College in the fall of 2008. The school will be similar to Greenville Technical Charter High School, and Brashier Middle College Charter High School, which started last fall. Fred Crawford, principal of Greenville Technical Charter High, said both schools have lengthy wait lists, and the nature of demand led them to launch a third charter school in the Greer area. "Demand is there, if you look at demographics and requests for having kids on the wait list," Crawford said. Crawford said the most recent wait list for Greenville Technical College Charter High had 285 students on it. The Greer Middle College will start out with a class of 100 ninth-graders, and plans are to enroll additional classes of 100 ninth-graders each year for the following three years. The Middle College concept allows students to pursue four-year individualized learning plans, and to earn dual credits for both high school and college credit. According to Crawford, 55 of the 95 graduates of Greenville Technical College Charter High in 2007 had earned at least 15 college credits.
